21.0 Degrees On The Hottest Day Of The Year

Bornholmers have experienced the second warmest day of this season in 147 years

Overall, the heat on Monday has been most spectacular on Bornholm.

Here the wind direction has caused the temperature of Hammerodde, which lies in the shelter of the sea by the south-east wind, to have measured a full 20.2 degrees.

It is the second highest temperature measured on Bornholm so early in the year (up to and including April 6), since the measurements began in November 1872. Only on April 4, 1953, it has been warmer – when it measured 22.0 degrees.

By contrast, the temperature at Neksø on Sunday was at most 13.8 degrees – as the city is more exposed to the colder sea.

Significantly colder on coasts with onshore winds

Just as summery it has almost been in parts of the country, just as cold it has been on the south and east-facing coasts. Here the air has been effectively cooled by the passage over the cold sea water.

Thus, in Skagen today they have not had a higher temperature than just 8.8 degrees, while the wind has been up to severe.

Two weeks ahead of time

That the thermometer today exceeded 20 degrees is exactly two weeks earlier than usual.

The average date of the first day of 20 degrees is, as seen over the past 30 years, April 20.

However, over the past few years we have also experienced 20 degrees in early April. Last year we got 20 degrees the first time April 7, and in 2018 we would have to wait another day until April 8.

In 2017 we saw more than 20 degrees already on March 31 – on the second warmest March day in Danish weather history. Conversely, in April 2004 we had no days with more than 20 degrees.
