SAS Fires Almost 1600 Employees In Denmark

SAS

First, SAS expects demand for air travel to be normalized in the year 2022.

As a result of the corona crisis, Scandinavian Airlines, SAS, dismisses its Danish employees in 1593.

It announces the company on Monday morning for TV 2.

The redundancies are distributed as follows:

  • 684 cabin employees.
  • 586 in groundhandling – employees who load and pack goods.
  • 176 pilots.
  • 96 technical staff.
  • 51 administrative staff.

The 1593 positions correspond to 1420 full-time positions, the company said. That’s fewer than expected.

On April 28, the company announced that about 5,000 of the company’s 13,000 employees would be laid off. Of which up to 1700 in Denmark.

Hope for reappointments

SAS calls the layoffs “a sad day in SAS’s history” and that the company is fighting for survival:

– After good and constructive negotiations with our unions, the number of dismissed full-time positions ends at 1420, as some employees have opted for voluntary termination, voluntary leave or to go part-time.

– It is very positive that we have been able to reduce the number of redundancies through negotiations and dialogue, but it is tremendously sad that there are still such a large number of employees that we must now say goodbye, writes Sille Beck-Hansen, acting press manager , in an email to TV 2.

According to the press chief, SAS first expects demand for air travel to return by 2022 and that the company hopes to be able to re-employ part of the staff as demand increases.

When the savings plan was presented in April, it was also stated that around 1900 Swedish employees and 1300 Norwegian employees were fired.

Massive decline in passengers

As a result of the coronavirus, like all other airlines, SAS has experienced a massive decline in the number of passengers.

This meant that SAS had to repatriate up to 10,000 of its employees by mid-March – of which 4,000 out of 4200 in Denmark .
