WHO Warns: The Pandemic Is In A New And Dangerous Phase

WHO

WHO: 8.53 million people are registered as infected globally during the pandemic. 453,834 are dead.

The coronavirus pandemic is in a new and dangerous phase, says the WHO.

The crisis is accelerating. There were 150,000 new cases Thursday – the highest number so far in a single day. Almost half of the new cases are in the United States.

So says Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization, WHO.

The virus is spreading rapidly and it is still deadly. Most people are still susceptible and can become infected, he says.

More than 8.53 million people have been registered as infected worldwide during the pandemic. 453,834 are dead. It showed a statement from Reuters Friday.

Tedros, whose leadership of the WHO has been heavily criticized by US President Donald Trump, urges all people to maintain social distance and to exercise “extreme vigilance”.

He says there are also many new cases of infection in South Asia and the Middle East.

WHO crisis expert Mike Ryan expresses particular concern over developments in Brazil, with 1230 people registered dead with Covid-19 in the past 24 hours.

About 12 percent of all cases of infection in Brazil have included health care workers, he says, highlighting the courage and bravery of the staff in this sector every day.

Brazil has the largest outbreak after the United States with 978,142 confirmed cases of infection and 47,748 deaths with Codvid-19.

While many countries are subject to more and more restrictions, Ryan emphasizes that the second wave of coronavirus can be avoided by advancing gradually and scientifically.

The reopening of societies and economies must take place step by step, and it must be based on facts, he says.
