Sweden closes the border – wants to keep Danes away from Christmas shopping

Sweden

However, the ban does not apply to Swedish citizens or Danes who live or work in Sweden.

Sweden closes the border with Denmark from midnight.

This is what the Swedish Minister of the Interior Mikael Damberg says at a press conference on Monday.

According to the Minister, the entry ban must prevent Danes from flocking to Sweden due to the Danish closure of shops and malls.

It can make many Danes, for example, go to Malmö to buy Christmas presents. That is why the government has decided to introduce an entry ban against Denmark, he said at a press conference on Monday.

The hope is that it will help limit the infection with the new mutation of coronavirus from England, which has already infected at least ten people in Denmark.

However, the ban does not apply to Swedish citizens or Danes who live or work in Sweden. At the same time, freight transport is also exempt from the entry ban.

The UK is also subject to an entry ban

In addition to Denmark, an entry ban will also be introduced against the United Kingdom, where a new mutation of covid-19 has become widespread.

In Denmark, ten cases of the virus have been detected from 14 November to 3 December in North Jutland and Greater Copenhagen.

However, the real number can be four to five times higher, as the Statens Serum Institut (SSI) only tests a proportion of the positive corona samples for other variants.

The new variant of coronavirus has primarily spread in the south east of England. This region also includes the capital London.

This has led several countries – including Denmark – to introduce a ban on entry from the UK or tighten restrictions on travelers from here.

The new variant has not yet been confirmed in Sweden. But it can not be ruled out that it exists in the country, the Public Health Authority announces.
