Dutchman Ronald Koeman is the new head coach of FC Barcelona. It informs the Spanish football club on Twitter. Koeman has been given a two-year contract .
On Monday, Barcelona fired Quique Setien as coach after the club were knocked out of the Champions League with a humiliating 2-8 defeat in the quarter-finals to Bayern Munich.
Koeman, 57, has reached an agreement with Barcelona that runs until June 30, 2022.
With the agreement, Koeman will stop as national coach for the Netherlands, which he has otherwise managed successfully since 2018.
Koeman himself played in Barcelona in the years from 1989 to 1995, and from 1998 to 2000 he was also the assistant coach of the club.
His coaching career then took off and he has been the head coach of Vitesse, Ajax, Benfica, PSV, Valencia, AZ Alkmaar, Feyenoord, Southampton and Everton.
Now he has to return to Barcelona to solve the task of rebuilding the Spanish big club, which among others has Lionel Messi.
Last season, it did not turn into a single title for Barcelona, who are otherwise used to picking up trophies. In the league, it became a second place after arch-rivals Real Madrid.
