The incumbent President Andrzej Duda of the National Conservative PiS is being challenged by the opposition center party Citizens’ Platform, PO’s candidate Rafal Trzaskowski.
Warsaw’s Liberal Mayor has had a relatively rapid rise in opinion polls. He entered the electoral movement much later than Duda, but now has a support of about 30 percent. It can be compared to the president’s support of about 40 percent, in current measurements.
– There have been many people voting today, there have been long queues for the polling stations. The turnout is around 48 per cent and if it continues this way it could mean a record, says SVT’s foreign reporter Elin Jönsson, who is in Warsaw.
The rally to the election has been very much about values, she says.
– At the end of the election campaign, there has been a lot of discussion about the LGBT issue. That is because the incumbent President Andrzej Duda has said that he thinks that the EU, together with his opponent Rafal Trzaskowski, is pushing Poland what he calls LGBT ideology, which he believes is a bigger threat to Poland than Communism once was.
One of them is unlikely to get more than 50 percent of the vote in Sunday’s election, which is required to avoid a second round of elections, TT writes.
