Millions of English people will be banned from leaving tomorrow.
A new variant of coronavirus has spread to large sections of the population in the UK capital, London, as well as the South East and East of England.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson has therefore held meetings with his coronavirus expert group on Friday and Saturday to discuss the risk involved.
At a press conference on Saturday at 5 pm Danish time, Boris Johnson said that British researchers now believe that the new type of coronavirus infects 70 percent more than normal.
Therefore, it has chosen to impose strict restrictions in several places in the country. But it is not feared that it will result in a more severe course of the disease, Johnson also said.
– We are sure that the coronavirus variant spreads faster, but not that it is more dangerous or that vaccines do not work against it.
New level in warning system
So far, the UK has been working on a three-level alert system, but due to the new virus, a level four has been created that contains extremely stringent rules.
Both London and the South East of England will be subject to the new level four, which means, among other things, that there will be a curfew in the areas.
In addition, you may only be seen with one other person outside your own home, and you must work from home unless this is not possible.
In addition, one must not leave the level four areas, even to celebrate Christmas.
– We can not celebrate Christmas as we usually do. One must not leave level four areas and the rest of the country should also consider whether to drop the trip for Christmas, Boris Johnson said.
Rolls reliefs back
In addition to introducing a new level in the warning system, they have also chosen to roll back a number of easing restrictions over Christmas.
It was otherwise the plan that one had to mingle across three households to celebrate Christmas together in the period December 23 to December 27, but now it will only apply on December 24.
In addition, Boris Johnson made it clear that one should not expect to hold New Year’s party this year, as one may only be seen with one other household on New Year’s Eve.
“I know many will be saddened by this, but we have to do what is necessary,” said Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
The new, stricter level four restrictions will already take effect on Sunday 20 December.
