The Government of Canada proposes that special vulnerable groups – as well as the caregivers who care for them – should have the vaccine first.
Canada is now the second country in the West to approve a corona vaccine for use.
Canada’s health authorities announced on Wednesday that they are giving the green light to the corona vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech, writes the news agency Reuters.
“The approval of the vaccine is due to evidence that it is safe, effective and of good quality,” said a statement from Health Canada.
Tests have shown that the vaccine, developed in a collaboration between German BioNTech and American Pfizer, is 95 percent effective.
Britain was the first western country to approve the vaccine, and completed its first vaccinations on Tuesday. Also in the EU and in the US, the vaccine is about to be approved.
Canada expects to receive its first doses of the vaccine during December, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday.
Enough for ten million
Initially, Canada has an order for 20 million doses of the vaccine, enough to vaccinate 10 million people, and has an option to purchase an additional 56 million doses.
The vaccine will be distributed free of charge across Canada, federal authorities said, and it will be up to the states to decide how to distribute it.
Initially, however, the government proposes that particularly vulnerable groups in hospitals and nursing homes – as well as the staff who take care of them – should have the first doses.
