EU foreign ministers have agreed to prepare sanctions against Belarus, says Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde (S).
This will be announced in connection with a meeting with the Union’s Foreign Ministers, which will be held digitally on Friday afternoon.
We need further sanctions against those who have violated democratic principles or violated human rights in Belarus, “tweeted European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen following developments in Belarus following Sunday’s presidential election.
“I am confident that the discussion during today’s Foreign Ministers’ Meeting will demonstrate our strong support for the Belarussian people’s right to fundamental freedoms and democracy,” she added.
Sweden for sanctions
The Riksdag’s EU Committee agreed earlier today that Sweden’s line ahead of Friday’s Foreign Ministers’ meeting is to demand targeted sanctions against Belarus.
