The Danish film “Druk” has received an Oscar for Best International Film.

Three times before, a Danish film has won an Oscar for Best International Film.

It was “Babette’s Guest” by Gabriel Axel in 1988, “Pelle the Conqueror” by Bille August in 1989 and “Revenge” by Susanne Bier in 2011.

Every year, Denmark nominates one feature film, which competes to be shortlisted first and then nominated for an Oscar.

Here is a list of how things have gone in the last ten years for the Danish Oscar winners.

2021: “Print” by Thomas Vinterberg. Was shortlisted, nominated and won an Oscar.

2020: “The Queen” by May el-Toukhy. Was not shortlisted.

2019: “The Guilty One” by Gustav Möller. Was shortlisted but not nominated.

A large part of the thank you speech is also about Vinterberg’s daughter Ida, who at the age of 19 died a few days inside the filming for the film. The film and the statuette are dedicated to her, says a clearly moved Vinterberg in his speech of thanks.

– We ended up making this movie for her as a monument.

– So Ida, this is a miracle that just happened, and you’re part of that miracle. Maybe you have pulled in some threads somehow. This one is for you, he says.

It is Denmark’s first statuette at tonight’s Oscars and the first in the category since 2011, when Susanne Bier’s film “Revenge” won.

The other nominees were “Better Days” from Hong Kong, “Collective” from Romania, “The Man Who Sold His Skin” from Tunisia and “Quo Vadis, Aida?” from Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Thomas Vinterberg was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Director.

Denmark ended up getting two Oscar statuettes out of the four possible at this year’s Oscars. The mower Mikkel EG Nielsen also received a statuette for Best Cutting for “Sound of Metal”.

In his speech, the Danish film editor thanked a large number of actors behind the film and said, among other things:

– It has been like following a rainbow, and today we found the gold.
