The United States will execute first woman in 70 years

United States

The US government will execute the woman Lisa Montgomery on December 8. The country last executed a woman in 1953.

The U.S. Department of Justice is preparing to carry out the first state execution of a woman in nearly 70 years.

This is clear after the ministry announced in a statement on Friday that the convicted murderer Lisa Montgomery is to be executed on December 8.

The now 52-year-old Montgomery was convicted in 2007 of strangling a pregnant woman to death in the state of Missouri.

According to the Department of Justice, she will be executed with a lethal injection in the Terre Haute Jail in the state of Indiana.

The U.S. government most recently executed a woman in 1953, according to the organization Death Penalty Information Center.

At the time, a woman named Bonnie Heady was executed in a gas chamber in the state of Missouri for kidnapping and killing a six-year-old.

The Ministry of Justice announced in the same announcement on Friday that a man named Brandon Bernard will be executed on December 10.

He and several accomplices were convicted of killing two youth priests in 1999.

The two executions will be the eighth and ninth to be implemented by the US government in 2020.

17-year break in executions

President Donald Trump’s administration resumed state executions in July this year after a 17-year hiatus.

Since then, the U.S. Department of Justice has executed more people than all of Trump’s predecessors back in 1963 have executed combined.

The last time the US government executed more than six people in a year was in 1942.

The decision to resume state executions was taken after the United States Prison Bureau last year announced it would change protocol on lethal injections.

The change has meant that one substance is now used instead of three different ones in executions with lethal injection.

The execution method has been criticized several times for being inhuman and extremely painful for the prisoners.
