US Democratic Congressmen & Congresswomen wear Ghana’s Kente as they observe a 9-minute moment of silence in honour of George Floyd.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other Democratic Congressmen and Congresswomen kneel and observe a moment of silence to honour George Floyd and victims of racial injustice June 8 while rocking Ghana’s Kente.

Top Democrats unveiled a major police reform bill Monday morning in an effort to galvanize public pressure into legislative action as protesters nationwide demand racial justice after the killing of George Floyd.

The bill would make dramatic changes to police policy across the country and undo decades-old laws that Democrats and activists say has led to the deaths of black men and women at the hands of police officers, including 46-year-old  Floyd in Minneapolis, two weeks ago.

Before introducing the police reform bill, Bass, Hoyer, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) and Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) and other top Democrats gathered in the Capitol in silence for 8 minutes and 46 seconds, the amount of time an officer knelt of Floyd’s neck. The Democrats, all clad in Kente stoles, knelt together on the floor to honour Floyd and other black Americans killed by police.

Thousands of mourners are expected to pay their respects to Floyd in a public memorial in his hometown of Houston on Monday before he is buried Tuesday.

Floyd’s death seems to bring a lot of changes in America, a country where police brutality is very common.

A few tweeps reacted to Nancy Pelosi and other members of Congress’ move as shared below:

“AMERICA IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE COUNTRIES IN THE WORLD & I’M HAPPY TO SEE LAWMAKERS ROCKING THE KENTE CLOTH SCARVES FROM GHANA Red heartRed heartRed heartFlag of Ghana

GhanaiansFlag of Ghana kindly requesting back the Kente. Plsssss Loudly crying face

Standing in front of a church and holding up a bible you never read for a photo op is no different than kneeling in Kente cloth you never wear for a photo op. Politicians (right or left) who use props as a shortcut to connect with human beings: Stop it. Your photo ops are gross.

My ancestors did not invent Kente cloth for them to be worn by publicity-obsessesed politicians as “activism” in 2020.

The image of Nancy Pelosi kneeling wearing a kente cloth is so woke that it actually feels racist

I know we are in unexpected times and anything is possible but listen man I did not have “Pelosi in Kente cloth” on the bingo card

Oh for crying out loud, just pass some laws. AND KENTE KENTE CLOTHS?! Who’s idea was that?! Jus… just get some policy goin shesh.”
