The world community almost reached the goal of securing $ 56 billion to fight coronavirus.
50 million euros or just over 370 million euros. Denmark has now undertaken to use the joint fight to develop a vaccine against the coronavirus, among other things.
No country, no company and no organization can win this match alone. We need to stand together, share our knowledge and solutions. And we need a unified, strategic approach to research, said Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) this afternoon on a video link from Copenhagen.
Let’s stand together at a distance – and together create a better future, she added.
Today’s Donor Conference was a global initiative organized by the European Commission. The goal was to ensure that the world community commits to spending just under $ 56 billion to prevent, diagnose and treat the coronavirus. And all countries should be able to benefit from the results that are being achieved.
Almost reached the finish line
The conference kicked off at 3pm on Monday, and throughout the afternoon, a number of countries, international organizations, companies and individuals pledged millions of support for the fight against Covid-19.
The European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, who was also the chairperson, promised that the Commission will spend more than 10 billion kroner on the case. Germany followed suit for about £ 3.9 billion, while the UK would spend £ 3.3 billion.
Italy and Spain, two of the countries most affected by the infection, both announced that they will spend just under £ 750 million to fight Covid-19. And the singer Madonna donated $ 6.8 million.
After three hours, the various actors had pledged to spend just over $ 55 billion to fight the crisis, which so far has cost more than 247,000 people worldwide.
The President of the Commission stressed that today’s donor conference is just the beginning of “the marathon now ahead of us”.
“We need everyone to come on board,” said Ursula von der Leyen.
