Small Glimmer Of Light In Italy’s Corona-Darkness As Daily Infections Decline

Italy

Authorities have extended the closure until after Easter, but express cautious optimism. 11,591 people have now lost their lives to coronavirus in Italy.

The daily death toll increased again today compared to the previous day. But nonetheless, government officials express cautious optimism in their daily briefings about the outbreak.

The small glimmer of light in the darkness is not due to the death toll, but the figure for new confirmed cases.

That number dropped today for the third day in a row. And the decline is significant: Yesterday the figure was 3,815 – today it is 1,648, the BBC writes .

Same number of tests

“The number of those registered as infected is declining, even if we do the same number of tests we have done in recent days,” the head of Italy’s High Health Council, Franco Locatelli, said at a press conference late yesterday.

However, the authorities warn against rejoicing too soon.

“We must not let the parades fall, but we will continue on the right course, ” said the governor of Italy’s most affected region, Lombardy, Attilio Fontana.

Flag on half bar

All over Italy, today, the flag was cut in half, while the country held a minute’s silence in honor of the many victims of Covid-19.

The Italian government yesterday decided that the country should be closed down until Easter Sunday, April 12.

Italians have been subject to extensive restrictions for three weeks to limit the spread of coronavirus.

From several sides there is a demand that the closure of the country be extended again after Easter.

The governor of the southern region of Puglia said yesterday that the restrictions should be extended until May.
