Spanish Soldiers Find Survivors ‘Dead In Their Beds’ At Elderly Centers

Spanish soldiers

Spanish soldiers who are involved in the fight against coronavirus have had violent experiences.

That’s what Spain’s defense minister, Margarita Robles, said in an interview with the television station Telecinco .

One of the military’s tasks is to disinfect centers for senior citizens. And here, according to Margarita Robles, the soldiers have found “bereaved and even dead elderly people in their beds” at the centers.

The minister says the Spanish government will be “stern and inflexible in the way elderly are treated”.

Investigation

It is still unclear which and how many elderly centers the defense minister spoke about. It is also unknown when the findings were made.

We do not know, strictly speaking, what happened. But what we do know is that nursing homes have been one of the major sources of infection spread in Spain, says Danish journalist Kasper Kloch, who is in Barcelona.

The state prosecutor in Spain will now investigate the case, writes the newspaper El Pais .

Specifically, according to the newspaper, the state prosecutor will launch an investigation into allegations of “elderly people, some of them ill, resident in extreme situations and poor health conditions, as well as deceased residents” in elderly centers.

Last week, it emerged that 17 residents had died at a single nursing home in Madrid after being infected with coronavirus.

2,696 died

Spain is one of the countries in the world most affected by the coronavirus.

A total of 39,673 people have been infected, the latest figures from the Spanish Ministry of Health show. The death toll is now called 2,696.

5,400 of those infected are healthcare workers, which accounts for almost 14 percent of all cases.

The entire Spanish healthcare system is under enormous pressure, and in Madrid it is already close to collapse. The next few days will show if it can hold up in the rest of Spain, says journalist Kasper Kloch.

Spain’s contagion curve continues to look worse than Italy’s, taking into account when the outbreaks in the two countries began.

Italy is the country in the world that, overall, has the largest number of deaths and the second largest number of infected after China.
