2020 is the warmest year ever in Sweden

2020 varmaste året någonsin i Sverige

2020 has been the warmest year ever measured in Sweden – with an average temperature of 7.5 degrees.

According to SMHI, the record temperatures are a result of partly the weather and partly the ongoing climate changes, reports SVT .

– It is clear that the situation is serious, says Erik Kjellström, professor at SMHI, to SVT.

A contributing factor to the record temperature is the mild winter, but several months have been unusually warm according to SMHI’s measurements.

– As many as ten of the year’s twelve months have been warmer than normal with extra large deviations during January, June and November, says Erik Kjellström to SVT.

The months that deviate are May and July, which were slightly colder than usual.

“Warm throughout Scandinavia”

Previously, 2014 was the warmest year ever measured in Sweden, but 2020 looks to be half a degree warmer according to SMHI.

– Last winter, the weather was dominated by mild southwest winds from the Atlantic, which means that it has been warm throughout Scandinavia. On top of this is the global warming that contributes to it being warmer than it would have been during a corresponding winter with southwest winds before climate change began, says Erik Kjellström to SVT and continues:

– So it is a combination of weather and global warming that makes us have such high temperatures.

“There is nothing positive”

If the high temperatures continue to persist, we will in the future see milder winters with shorter snow seasons.

– There is nothing positive in it. We see that it is getting warmer globally and in Sweden, and research indicates that the climate will continue to change as long as the carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere increases. So the message is that the greenhouse effect must be slowed down before it goes too far, says Erik Kjellström to TT.
