Last year, US President Donald Trump expressed interest in buying Greenland from Denmark. This led to great debate in Greenland and Denmark.
Today, almost a year later, the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, is visiting Denmark. Here he met with DR News Johannes Langkilde for an exclusive interview.
He clearly said that the United States has hesitated too much to secure its interests in region.
“We have all been naive by looking at Russian and Chinese interests becoming more aggressive,” Mike Pompeo told the Associated Press. DR Today.
As the ice retreats in the Arctic due to climate change, new opportunities for research, trade and transport routes open up. It has set in motion a geopolitical competition between the United States, Russia and China.
Here the Americans have slept for an hour, the Secretary of State acknowledged:
– We’re a little late for the party, but it’s ok. I’ve been to parties too late before and have had fun anyway. It should probably succeed, Mike Pompeo said.
Now the United States must act, it sounds.
– If our enemies want to compete in the area, we can not just turn the other cheek. We must respond in a way that increases welfare and security for both people in the United States and in Denmark, said the Foreign Minister.
The Americans are already doing that.
Just over a month ago, the new, American opened consulate in the capital of Greenland, Nuuk.
US President Donald Trump has also given orders for one to be developed fleet of icebreakers that can operate in the Arctic. It will pave the way for US economic investment and infrastructure development in the region. The fleet should be ready by the end of this decade, Donald Trump announced earlier this year.
Last year, the United States also created the so-called 2. fleet after seven years hibernation. The naval force is responsible for the area from the northeastern United States to the North Pole.
– Our goal is very clear. We want to ensure a prosperous and secure Faroe Islands and Greenland, and we want Denmark to do well, said Mike Pompeo.
Close allies
Earlier today, the US Secretary of State was with his Danish colleague Jeppe Kofod (S) rostrum, after discussing everything from coronavirus to arctic conditions.
Here he said, among other things, that Denmark is still one of the USA’s closest allies.
– We are two nations, both of which are robust democracies. And we must continue to defend that. Denmark and we have done this throughNato, said Mike Pompeo.
Pompeo also met with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) and representatives from Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
The official part of the visit is over, but Pompeo has a streak of meetings on his agenda before flying on later today.
