Denmark gets six or seven vaccines out of every glass of corona vaccine. Norway settles for five – and throws out the rest.
The new corona vaccine, which is currently being distributed throughout Europe, is packaged by the manufacturer with five doses in each glass.
But in fact, there is a nice chunk of extra vaccine in every glass because the manufacturer Pfizer will be on the safe side.
In Denmark, the Statens Serum Institut has succeeded in getting six or sometimes seven doses out of each glass, so there is a vaccine for more.
This is not done in Norway.
Here you take five doses from each glass and throw the rest out, writes the Norwegian newspaper Verdens Gang.
“Vi er positive”
The Norwegian authorities are not yet convinced that it is safe to dispense “extra” doses from the glasses. But they tell Verdens Gang that they have contacted the Danish colleagues to clarify the issue.
– We have not decided, but we are positive about utilizing each glass as much as possible. We will make a decision very quickly, says director of the National Institute of Public Health (NIPH) Camilla Stoltenberg.
She says there are two key issues that need to be clarified. Firstly, whether the purchase contract with Pfizer is formulated in such a way that the 6th and 7th doses are “free”, or whether they are included in the total number of doses delivered, if one utilizes them. This may ultimately mean that the buyers and the manufacturer need to look more closely at the purchase contract.
And secondly, whether one risks vaccinating too many. Each person must be vaccinated twice every few weeks. If you can vaccinate more than expected now, then you must also be sure that you can do it again when people need to have their second plug.
Nothing is wasted
Chief physician Anders Koch from the Statens Serum Institut in Denmark tells Verdens Gang that there is no risk in taking an extra dose from each vaccine bottle. He says that it is possible when – as in Denmark – it is trained staff who dose the vaccine, almost without wasting anything:
– It will be seven instead of five. It’s absolutely amazing, he says.
