In a vote in the Scottish National Assembly in Edinburgh, it has been unanimously agreed that Scotland should be the first country in the world with free menstrual products. It reports the BBC.
The proposal was made by Monica Lennon, who is the health spokeswoman for the Scottish Labor Party.
Lennon calls the bill “practical and progressive.” She says the great importance of making such products available to everyone has been underscored by the coronavirus pandemic.
“Menstruation does not stop due to pandemics, and the work of improving the availability of absolutely essential tampons and sanitary pads and products has never been more important,” she says.
According to the bill, the Scottish Government is to develop a nationwide program to ensure free menstrual products for all who need them.
Schools, colleges and universities must also be able to offer a number of products free of charge in accordance with the bill.
Scotland’s Prime Minister Nicola Sturgeon wrote on Twitter that she was “proud” to vote for the groundbreaking proposal.
