Ireland’s Prime Minister Leo Varadkar says, according to the Irish public service media RTE, that it is now clear that the country’s voters have voted no to two changes to the Irish constitution. The count is still ongoing.
In one case, voters were asked, among other things, whether the state’s protection of families should also include people other than married couples.
In the second, the voters were asked about two formulations, that women’s contribution to society is in the home and as primary caregivers, should be removed and that a new one should be written into the constitution instead, that care is the responsibility of the whole family.
Leo Varadkar has called the existing formulations very old-fashioned and sexist towards women. The voters, therefore, think otherwise.
