The number of Danes who use cash is declining, figures from Danmarks Nationalbank show.

If you get a 500-kroner note in your hands and bounce over a marked red stripe on the front, then there is no reason for confusion.

For the note is not counterfeit. On the other hand, it is new, and the first in a row from a new supplier of Danish banknotes.

At first glance, the banknote is similar to the existing 500-krone banknote for confusion, but on closer inspection, several security upgrades have been added.

Including the red stripe on the front and a small, tactile triangle on the left side of the banknote, among other things.

This will make the banknotes “even more secure and difficult to counterfeit”, says Governor Per Callesen.

– The existing ones are also very secure. Seen in an international context, the counterfeiting of Danish banknotes is modest, says Danmarks Nationalbank Governor Per Callesen.

Even though new 500-krone banknotes are now coming to the country’s ATMs and shops, the previous 500-krone banknotes can still be used, Danmarks Nationalbank informs.

Banknotes from French hands

The new 500-krone banknotes are the first banknotes printed by the French printing company Oberthur Fiduciaire SAS. They took over the task in 2018, after Danmarks Nationalbank put it out to tender. On that occasion, the banknotes have been upgraded:

– As the machines of the French printing house are different from the machines that were in Danmarks Nationalbank’s own printing house, you could just as well use the opportunity to update the banknotes and add additional security elements, says Danmarks Nationalbank Governor Per Callesen.

Likewise, the production of Danish coins has been sent abroad. In 2017, the first were thus delivered from Finland
