World calls for Michelle Obama as ‘only person who can beat Trump’ after Biden quits

Joe Biden has withdrawn from his bid for re-election, saying it is “in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down” in a letter posted to his social media account

Michelle Obama has been dubbed as the “only person who can beat Donald Trump ” following Joe Biden’s sensational withdrawal from his bid for re-election.

Biden, 81, has himself endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democrat presidential candidate in the race against Trump. However, figures online have expressed their support for Obama, who served as the first lady of the United States from 2009 to 2017.

Dragons’ Den entrepreneur Steven Bartlett, 31, previously backed Obama, a graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School and a former associate dean of student services at the University of Chicago.

The celeb’s message has been echoed by others on X, which was Twitter, tonight, following Biden’s letter on social media. It read: “While it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling the duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

Minutes after the letter was posted by the 81-year-old politician, scores of tweets praised Obama, 60, and called on her to throw her hat in the ring. Senator Kevin Cramer of North Dakota had said this week: “I don’t think I’d be revealing any sort of polling secrets if I said Michelle Obama would probably be the one person that could step in and keep the party united and probably provide a little bit of a moving start because of her obvious notoriety.”

One woman tweeted tonight: “If they choose anyone other than Kamala Harris or Michelle Obama, I will NOT be voting.” Another posted: “Michelle Obama… your country needs you…PLEASE throw your hat in the presidential race…you can beat him and think your husband was the first black president and you can be the first black and woman…power couple extraordinaire.”

Another X user said: “Michelle Obama is the only one who’ll defeat Trump.” Meanwhile, another on social media shared: “In my opinion, Michelle Obama is the only real contender that could beat Trump – she would be able to energize voters, the party and has name recognition.”

But father-of-four Biden said online: “Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year. Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump.”

Biden’s decision came as he has been isolating at his Delaware beach house after being diagnosed with COVID-19 last week, huddling with a shrinking circle of close confidants and family members about his political future. Biden said he would address the nation later this week to provide “detail” about his decision.

Senior campaign and White House staff were notified just minutes before the letter went out, according to people familiar with the matter. Biden had been reflecting on his future for the past couple days and the decision was closely held.
