The United States Supreme Court ruled Thursday that President Donald Trump must hand over his tax returns to the New York state attorney.
The two judges appointed by President Trump, Neil Gorsuch and Brett Kavanaugh, both voted for the majority and against the president.
Donald Trump is the first US president since Richard Nixon in the 1970s who has not voluntarily published his tax returns.
It is the company that is responsible for Trump’s accounts, Mazars USA, which has the tax returns. The company has previously stated that they will comply with a ruling by the Supreme Court to extradite them.
Does not mean publication
It will probably take several weeks for the court to issue the formal order for handing over the documents.
The tax returns will be handed over to a so-called grand jury that handles the case.
The grand jury’s work is confidential, so the delivery of the documents does not mean that they can or should be made public.
Investigates Trump
New York State Attorney Cyrus Vance is investigating whether Trump violated the Electoral Funding Act by paying a porn actor and former Playboy model to keep an eye on his relationship with him during the election campaign.
Trump had lost in all lower courts, but had appealed to the Supreme Court.
After the Supreme Court decision, Vance sent out a press release praising the ruling.
This is a great victory for our country’s justice system and for the basic principle that no one – not even the president – stands above the law, Vance wrote.
