Tanned beach lions, beach volleyball and surfing under a cloudless sky.
That’s probably what many associate with the world – famous Copacabana beach in the Brazilian million-dollar city of Rio de Janeiro.
However, it was far from the sight that yesterday met visitors on the iconic beach. Crosses and red balloons were erected here to mark the fact that over 100,000 Brazilians have now died of covid-19.
The sad milestone comes at a time when the pandemic has not yet peaked, but shops and restaurants have still opened their doors, the BBC points out .
Brazil is the country in the world with the second most corona deaths – surpassed only by the United States.
The country’s death rate is currently 476 per million inhabitants , and according to Johns Hopkins University it is the 11th highest in the world. However, the real number is thought to be higher due to limited testing.
