Today, the malls open, but that may be the beginning of the end for them, the expert believes

Wednesday is probably a happy day for the country’s department stores, which will finally be allowed to open their doors again after several months of closure.

But in general, the future does not look bright for Magasin, Rødovre Centrum and all the others, says expert in consumer behavior Nicolai Broby Eckert, who is a partner at the consulting house Simon-Kucher & Partners.

– In five to ten years, it will look completely different for department stores. There will be far fewer of them, and those who are left will be decorated differently, he tells TV 2.

According to Nicolai Broby Eckert, it is especially the increasing online shopping that threatens the existence of malls.

Changed consumption pattern

In the past year, online shopping has set a record, and according to the Danish Chamber of Commerce, the expectation is that growth will continue at 25 percent over the next three years.

This is therefore a permanent change in the Danes’ consumption pattern and not just a consequence of the corona crisis, says Nicolai Broby Eckert.

– Of course there will be a shift where more people return to the physical stores when they open, but it will be far from all, he says.
