Swedish Defense investigates report of new cable break in the Baltic Sea

The break is suspected to be on a cable running between Finland and Germany. It is believed to have occurred in the Swedish economic zone around Gotland.

The Swedish Armed Forces tell TV4 that it has received information about and is investigating a possible cable break in the Baltic Sea.

The Swedish Coast Guard informs SVT that it is suspected that a cable break occurred off Gotland, where a preliminary investigation has been initiated, led by the Prosecution Service.

– The suspected cable break must have occurred in the Swedish economic zone outside Gotland. It is a cable that runs between Finland and Germany. We have a vessel on the way to assist in the investigation, the coast guard’s press service tells SVT.

There are no reports of what kind of cable it is, but the incident has been known about since yesterday, the Coast Guard says.

Swedish police do not have further specific information, but simply say that they are monitoring the situation closely in cooperation with relevant authorities.

Several cables damaged previously

Many authorities are currently focusing their attention on the Baltic Sea, more specifically the telecommunications and data cables as well as gas pipelines that lie on the seabed.

There have been several cable breaks in the Baltic Sea in the past.

In November, several data cables running between Germany, Sweden, Finland and Lithuania were damaged.

Several countries suspect it to be sabotage, and the main suspect quickly became the Chinese ship Yi Peng 3, which was in the area of the breaches shortly before they occurred.

China and the ship’s crew invited Sweden and the three other countries involved on board to witness the Chinese investigation of the ship’s anchor in particular , which appeared to have been damaged – and which was therefore suspected by several of the countries involved of having been dragged over the cables.

The Prime Minister views it ‘with the utmost seriousness’

Swedish Prime Minister, Ulf Kristersson, writes on X that he has known about the information about the new possible cable break for some time.

The government is receiving ongoing information about the possible incident from the authorities investigating what happened, it says.

“We view all information about possible damage to infrastructure in the Baltic Sea with the utmost seriousness. As I have said before, it must be seen in the context of the serious security situation,” he writes.
