Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy convicted for illegal financing of the 2012 election campaign.

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy on Thursday pleaded guilty to illegally financing his 2012 election campaign.

Sarkozy has been convicted of spending more money than allowed on the election campaign.

In France, there is a ceiling on how much money candidates can spend on their election campaign. It should make the election campaigns more equal.

Used too much
In 2012, the ceiling was 22.5 million euros. However, Sarkozy must have spent at least 42.8 million euros and at the same time tried to hide the expenses via false documents.

Sarkozy lost the attempt to be re-elected in 2012 to François Hollande.

This is the second time this year that Sarkozy has been found guilty by a French court.

Bribe the Judge
In March, the former president, who held power from 2007 to 2012, received a sentence of three years in prison, two of which were suspended, for bribing a judge.

Sarkozy has appealed the verdict and is expected to serve his sentence in handcuffs.

It is not yet known on Thursday morning what punishment Sarkozy will receive for his illegal financing of the 2012 election campaign.
