Disappointed Hjulmand: ‘We didn’t play to score the next goal’

The national football coach was upset that Denmark could not pull off the victory.

Kasper Hjulmand had hoped for so much more than 1-1 in Denmark’s EC premiere, which is why the national coach is left with a bitter feeling.

He explained this in the minutes after Sunday’s match with Slovenia.

– We had put everything into winning the game, so we are left with a big disappointment, says Kasper Hjulmand to DR Sporten.

After an excellent lead and a good first half, Denmark slowly lost control of the game as the second half progressed.

– Slovenia created some things in their standard situations, and Benjamin Sesko had a dangerous kick outside the box, says Kasper Hjulmand.

– We didn’t produce enough. We had a huge chance which can close the game, and you have to score 2-0, otherwise there will be nervousness in the game.

‘Didn’t play to score the next goal’

And it did there. The nervousness set in and the Danes became too tense, explains Kasper Hjulmand

– We don’t play to score the next goal, but become too passive. It’s a shame, and we would have liked to have the three points, says Kasper Hjulmand.

The national team manager again emphasizes the importance of scoring to make it 2-0. If you don’t do that, a chance opportunity will easily arise which can turn the match on its head – just as happened when Erik Janza kicked the equalizer into the box via Morten Hjulmand’s rear.

– We must keep the initiative and go after the goal. Our offensive game in that period was neither strong nor insistent enough, so it’s a shame, says Kasper Hjulmand.

However, Denmark still has two games to secure advancement from the group stage, he hurries to emphasize.

In addition, it was positive to see goalscorer Christian Eriksen play a big role on Sunday night.

– He is a fantastic player and has something very special. He played fantastically today and is the rhythm of our team. We want to push him close to the goal and today we saw why. He has some finishing skills and breakthroughs that we need, says Kasper Hjulmand.
