Dane dead during floods in Belgium

There are no reports of Danes among the many who are still missing in Germany and Belgium.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs states that a Danish citizen was killed during the floods on Monday afternoon. The information comes from the Danish Embassy in Belgium.

“Unfortunately, this afternoon we have received confirmation that a Dane has died in connection with the floods in Belgium,” Erik Brøgger Rasmussen, director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Citizen Service, told TV 2.

In addition, he makes it clear that they have no knowledge that there should be Danes among the many hundreds of people who are still missing.

Floods have killed 194 people

In Germany and Belgium, at least 194 people have died as a result of the floods caused by extreme amounts of rain.

But now the storm is moving on, and both the southern part of Germany and Austria are now struggling with the water masses. In the coming days, forecasts show that the Balkans will be hit in the middle of the week, which has caused the authorities in several countries to go on alert . And in Denmark, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Citizen Service is also ready to assist Danes in need.

– We have no reports that it will be as violent as in Belgium and Germany, but of course it was not with them either. So if you are on holiday in those areas, keep an eye on the weather forecast and follow the local authorities’ instructions, says Erik Brøgger Rasmussen.

– It is the German authorities that first and foremost provide assistance to those who are stranded or in need of rehousing.

High alert

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ Citizen Service is already on high alert, as weeks 29 and 30 are the weeks when most Danes travel.

– We have many at work, and we can call in more if necessary. We hope for the best, but are prepared for the worst, says Erik Brøgger.
