Restaurants and cafes are burning up with fresh food – they are now being given away to shelters and drop-in centers.
Boxes of tomatoes, cucumbers and lettuce heads, bags of frozen burger buns and cans of freshly squeezed juice.
All raw materials that a number of the metropolitan area’s restaurants and cafés are now burning inside as a consequence of the closure for the rest of the year.
For the same reason, several of the eateries are now providing the surplus goods to the vulnerable and homeless who really need them.
One of the places is the restaurant chain Palæo, which is located in nine places in Copenhagen and the surrounding area.
– We had prepared for a lot of Christmas sales, and therefore we had filled up the warehouse. And then the country closed down at very short notice, so it had to go quickly to pass on the raw materials, says Casper Raagaard, who is responsible for operations at Palæo.
The restaurant chain uses ingredients such as apples, avocados, scallions, egg pancakes, meat and gluten-free burger buns. And they have now passed it on.
Tivoli, Leos Legeland and a number of cafés in Copenhagen have also decided to donate their surplus food.
