Barbados removes the British Queen as its head of state and becomes a republic

Nearly 400 years after the first ships from Britain arrived in Barbados, the country’s first president Sandra Mason will today take over power in the country as head of state from the British Queen.

Officially, the shift took place at midnight, and hundreds were gathered to celebrate in the capital, Bridgetown.
