The month of April this year ends up in the top 5 warmest April months in Danish weather history.
Another day of sun and spring heat.
We have had many of them this month of April, and on the last day of the month, the average temperature for April 2025 is 9.0 at the time of writing.
With a warm evening in sight, where temperatures do not drop below 10 degrees until around midnight, that number will not drop before we officially wave goodbye to the month of April.
This means that the month of April 2025 will end up as the fourth warmest April in Danish weather history.
The weather history goes back to 1874, when DMI began to record the weather in Denmark.
Warmest April months
The warmest April was April 2011, when the average temperature ended at 9.9 degrees, according to DMI.
The average temperature for a month is calculated as the average of the daily mean temperatures at DMI’s measuring stations in Denmark.
At the time of writing, the average temperature this year is 9.0 degrees, which in addition to the record in 2011 is only surpassed by April in 2009 and 2007.
9.0 degrees is almost two degrees above the climate normal for the month of April, which is 7.2 degrees.
In addition, the number of relatively warm days in April 2025 is exceptional, according to meteorologist at DMI, Sebastian Pelt.
– As many as 24 out of the 30 days of the month (80 percent) have offered nationwide maximum temperatures of at least 15.0°. This is the second highest number ever measured in an April (the record is 26 in April 2009), he writes on the social media X.
The spring months are getting warmer
The five warmest April months in Danish weather history were all recorded after the turn of the millennium.
If we look further down the list, 6th place is divided between two years – 2018 and 1948. In both years, the average temperature was measured at 8.4 degrees.
Although heat records can go back 50 or 100 years, the weather measurements show a trend that is unmistakable.
The climate has become warmer from 1874 until today.
After winter, spring is the season when the average temperature has risen the most since 1874 in Denmark until today.
This is shown in the graph below, where it can be seen that the average temperature has increased from 5.6 degrees in the period 1874-1899 to 7.3 degrees in the most recent climate period 1991-2020, where the largest increase occurred in the most recent climate period.

Spring 2024 set a record
The graph above also shows that the temperature in the spring of 2024 skyrocketed.
Last year, we experienced the warmest spring ever recorded in Denmark with an average temperature of as much as 9.1 degrees.
This is 1.8 degrees higher than the climate normal (1991-2020), and 0.1 degrees higher than the previous record from 2007.
In addition, the measurements show that as many as eight out of the 10 warmest spring months have been recorded after the turn of the millennium.
Everything therefore indicates that what we experience today as a record will become more normal in the future.
