A volcano has erupted in Iceland

The new outbreak occurs shortly after citizens in the area were asked to evacuate as there was a risk of an outbreak.

A volcano has erupted on Wednesday on the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland – near the town of Grindavik.

It shows live video from the area. This is written by Reuters – and can be seen here .

It is the fifth time that the volcano has erupted since December. According to the Icelandic media RUV, the crack is now 2.5 kilometers long – and will get longer.

Citizens are evacuated

The eruption comes shortly after increased seismic activity was detected on the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland.

This led to a message to the citizens of Grindavik and the tourist attraction Den Blå Lagune to evacuate.

The media Iceland Review wrote that.

A volcano expert says, according to the media, that a volcanic eruption was very likely. And now it has happened.

There are many earthquakes

RUV, which is an Icelandic media, writes that Grindavik was evacuated before noon, but that there are still emergency services at work in the town.

However, the plan is for emergency services to leave the city as soon as possible. This is what Úlfar Lúðvíksson, the police chief in Suðurnesj, tells the media.

There have been hundreds of small earthquakes since last year, and volcanic eruptions have caused lava to pour out of fissures, threatening to sweep the city away.
