Snowstorm hits parts of Denmark from Tuesday – there may be over 20 centimeters of snow

In parts of the country you can look forward to harsh winter weather with snow and sleet over the next two days.

The winter weather over Denmark continues to bite off, and the preliminary culmination is expected over the next two days, where in parts of Denmark you can be hit by a regular snowstorm.

Definition of blizzard

In Denmark it is called a snowstorm when …

  • More than 10 cm of snow falls in six hours
  • The wind speed reaches over 10 m / s
  • The temperature is around or below freezing so the snow can escape

A blizzard is defined as the combination of at least 10 centimeters of fresh snow over six hours as well as an average wind of at least 10 meters per second that can cause the snow to blow.

These criteria are expected to be met across the southeastern part of Denmark from Tuesday morning until Wednesday evening.

The snowstorm is expected to be most intense over the southeastern part of Lolland-Falster, Møn, on South Zealand and in particular on Bornholm, where more than 25 centimeters of snow can fall in just over 24 hours.

As the wind will at the same time blow up to gale force from the east with even stronger gusts, drift formations of between one and two meters can be expected, where it will be worst.

In addition, widespread snow drifts are expected over large parts of the southern parts of Denmark, where there is already plenty of snow.
